2.11.18 // I got my first seeds of 2019 planted 🌿 I planted these three beds with brassicas, radish, onions, carrots, beets and a few others! 🌿 here’s the five varieties of elderberries I am rooting! 🌿 “weeds” that are abundant in my garden right now: purple dead nettle, chickweed & henbit.
2.9.19 // Literally jumping for joy cuz today we finished sheet mulching another section of our homestead! This area is 1,386 sq ft and will be our perennial & herb garden! This is where we have planted figs, blueberries, strawberries and will be putting in a crap ton of herbs this spring! We started sheet mulching this area on Earthmas - and I’m so glad to be done with it! It’s also so exciting to finish a project so you can start the next one! Next on our list: dismantling our old (beautiful) barn and using the wood to create raised garden beds + worm composting beds! #sheetmulching #notillgardening
2.9.19 // Perhaps the longest worm I’ve ever seen in my garden. I got some weeding done yesterday. The winter weeds have been having a ball, and they’ve started to flower which means its time to get them out of the garden. I’ve been snipping them at the soil level to leave the roots in place to break down and build soil. #wormsofinstagram
2.3.19 // Last November we spent around $1000 less than our yearly average for the month. Of course our spending fluctuates based on home/car repair, my plant/seed addiction, grocery needs, etc. But I was so beyond impressed with just how little we needed to spend that month. I’ve often referred to it as our glory month- it’s became my (unrealistic) goal for each month. We hoped to do as well in December, but the hot water heater broke, in January we had car repairs... and that’s how the story goes most months. February though, we got this! Anyone want to join us for #frugalfebruary #debtfreejourney
2.2.19 // Today we skipped out on yard work & went for a hike at Hanging Rock ✨ We hiked the Tory’s Den trail for the first time. 3.4 miles & 24 floors. We set a goal to hike North Carolina’s tallest mountain in the next couple months: Mount Mitchell. Among my other hiking goals, hiking North Carolina’s 100 tallest peaks is something I’m working on.
2.1.19 // Back to the seed cleaning! I have been taking a break from seed cleaning. While I love this farm chore, it’s very tedious and time consuming. Yesterday I decided there is no need for me to remove 100 % of the chaff - and I called this good enough! Still on the fence about my future seed company, I don’t feel like I have the time I need to put into it presently. I think I will organize a seed swap to see how much interest there is in local seeds. Of course, I will keep saving seeds from every plant I grow! Seed saving is my favorite part of gardening! #seedsteward
